  13. At critiques hams occasionally contend they are "communication
  14. experts" and shouldn't provide other work. That viewpoint has its
  15. merit, and points to some possibilities worth considering.
  16. Certainly, being asked to be a "go-fer" is below our ability and
  17. is taken advantage of in on occasion.
  18.  
  19. Preparing for the need for "go-fers", messengers and such is what
  20. good Radio Officers provide. You find this in top-quality Field
  21. Day managers who plan for the varied tasks to be performed, not
  22. just operators.  In effect, they match need and people in accord
  23. with their interest and unique talents, whether they are 'hams'
  24. or not. Those very good at "go-fering" are given those tasks.
  25. [Civil Air Patrol cadets and Scouts are good at this. They don't
  26. have to be a licensed Amateur to participate.]  Example: In one
  27. county, a Radio Officer enlisted local farmers as members. Why?
  28. So their gasoline reserves (for tractors, etc.) can be used for
  29. emergency generators if local gas stations no longer can pump gas.

  31. There are many skills required in modern communications, not just
  32. that of a radio operator and message handler. An astute Radio
  33. Officer learns to expand activities and interest in emergency
  34. activities beyond just that of operating equipment and handling
  35. traffic. Many skills can be implemented just as there are many
  36. skills utilized in Field Day activities, whether its cook,
  37. driver, operators, registrar or other essential task.
